Sen. Natasha Marcus Contemplates Statewide Run Following Republican-Drawn District Changes

In a strategic move influenced by recent redistricting orchestrated by the Republican-controlled General Assembly in North Carolina, Democratic Senator Natasha Marcus of Mecklenburg County has decided not to seek reelection to the state Senate. The redistricting places her residence in a heavily GOP district, where a Republican incumbent, Sen. Vickie Sawyer of Iredell County, also resides.
Despite the setback, Senator Marcus expressed her consideration for a run for statewide office, although she did not specify the particular position. Candidate filing for the 2024 elections commences on December 4.
The redistricting, enacted last month, positioned Marcus and Republican Sen. Vickie Sawyer in the same 41st Senate District north of Charlotte. According to the North Carolina Constitution, candidates must reside in the district they seek to represent. However, an alternative Senate district in northwest and central Charlotte, seemingly favorable to Democrats, was created, offering Marcus another potential option if she chooses to relocate.
During discussions with legislative colleagues, Marcus highlighted the sentiment of not yielding to the challenges posed by the redistricting, stating, “We can’t let them win, we can’t let them do this to you and kick you out and make you leave the Senate.”
Despite the encouragement, Marcus decided against pursuing another Senate term. She cited her reluctance to leave her home in Davidson, where she raised her children, as a significant factor in her decision. Marcus, currently in her third two-year term, has been an outspoken critic of Republican policies, particularly those related to abortion and voting restrictions. With Republicans holding a narrow veto-proof majority in the Senate, Marcus may also explore the option of running for a politically competitive open House seat in northern Mecklenburg County.
In addition to the challenges faced by Marcus, the redistricting also placed incumbent Democrats Lisa Grafstein and Jay Chaudhuri in the same Wake County district. However, Grafstein, in her first term, has announced her intention to run for a different Senate seat in the county.
As the political landscape in North Carolina evolves, the decision of Senator Marcus underscores the complexities and strategic considerations that candidates must navigate in response to redistricting changes.
