Division Among “Squad” Members in House Votes on Israel and Hamas

Far-left Representatives Tlaib and Bush Break Ranks in Controversial Resolutions

Written By: Shafeek Ahmad, News Writer

Washington, D.C. – November 29, 2023 In a recent series of votes in the House of Representatives, divisions within the far-left “Squad” were starkly exposed as they weighed in on resolutions concerning Israel’s right to exist and condemning the actions of the terrorist group Hamas.

The Tuesday votes on H. Res. 888, which reaffirmed Israel’s right to exist, saw Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich, and Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., deviate from their “Squad” counterparts. They were the only members from the eight-person group who did not vote in favor of the resolution. Tlaib chose to vote “present,” while Bush abstained.

Interestingly, Bush also refrained from voting on H. Res. 793, which condemned Hamas for its brutal attack against Israel on Oct. 7 and demanded the immediate release of remaining hostages. Despite her previous refusal to condemn the attack, Tlaib voted in favor of this resolution, aligning with the rest of the “Squad.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital after the vote, Tlaib emphasized the importance of recognizing the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to live with democracy, safety, peace, and human dignity. She criticized the resolutions for allegedly ignoring the existence of the Palestinian people and falling short of promoting peaceful coexistence.

H. Res. 793 passed with a decisive 414-0 vote, while H. Res. 888 passed 412-1. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was the sole dissenting vote on H. Res. 888, citing concerns about the equating of anti-Zionism with antisemitism in the legislation.

Despite the general support for the resolutions within the “Squad,” the recent votes mark a shift from their stance in the weeks following the Hamas attack, where most members, excluding one, voted against a resolution condemning antisemitism on American college campuses.

Tlaib, in particular, faced criticism for her response to the attacks, leading to a censure by the House earlier this month for promoting false narratives regarding the Hamas attack on Israel and calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.

The divisions within the “Squad” underscore the complex nature of debates surrounding Israel and Hamas, as well as the challenges of maintaining unity within ideological groups on such contentious issues.
