Escalation on Israel-Lebanon Border: Hezbollah Launches Intense Rocket Barrage in Retaliation

Militant Group Responds to Israeli Airstrike that Claimed Lives of Senior Fighters

Written By Shafeek Ahmad, Published On 23-November-2023.

Beirut — In a significant escalation of hostilities, the militant Hezbollah group launched more than 50 rockets at military posts in northern Israel on Thursday. This aggressive move came in response to an Israeli airstrike targeting a home in southern Lebanon, resulting in the death of five of Hezbollah’s senior fighters.

The rocket barrage represents one of the most intense attacks since Hezbollah initiated its assaults on Israeli posts at the onset of the Israel-Hamas war. Hezbollah stated that by intensifying actions on the Israel-Lebanon border, it aims to alleviate pressure on the Gaza Strip, where Israel’s comprehensive offensive has resulted in a high number of casualties and extensive destruction.

The war was triggered by an October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and the taking of hostages. An agreement for a four-day ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages was initially set for Thursday but was later announced to take effect on Friday morning.

Hezbollah claimed to have fired 48 Katyusha rockets at an Israeli army base in Beit Zeitem and reported another attack where its fighters targeted Israeli soldiers in a house in the Manara Kibbutz, allegedly killing them with an anti-tank missile. Israel’s military has not commented on this claim.

Thursday witnessed a flurry of Hezbollah statements, with at least 21 claims of attacks, a one-day record since the conflict began. The group asserted that its fighters also struck Israeli tanks.

The intensified assault followed an Israeli airstrike in Beit Yahoun, southern Lebanon, which resulted in the deaths of five senior Hezbollah fighters, including Abbas Raad, son of the head of Hezbollah’s parliamentary bloc in Lebanon, Mohammed Raad. The total number of Hezbollah fighters killed in seven weeks of fighting now stands at least 83.

Thousands, including senior Hezbollah officials, attended Raad’s funeral in the southern village of Jbaa. During the ceremony, top Hezbollah official Hashem Safieddine declared, “When Netanyahu accepts to abide by a truce, this means he is not capable of wiping out the resistance,” referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in Beirut on Thursday. Discussions focused on the Gaza war, efforts to halt Israeli aggression, and the tense Lebanon-Israel border situation, according to a Hezbollah statement.

Amirabdollahian, upon his arrival in Lebanon, warned that the Israel-Hamas war could “spiral out of control” if a truce did not last.

In a related development, Iran-backed factions in Iraq, including Kataib Hezbollah, have carried out over 60 rocket or suicide drone attacks at bases housing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. military reported on Thursday that one of its warships in the Red Sea successfully intercepted bomb-carrying drones launched from territory controlled by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

Editor’s Note: The situation remains highly volatile, with regional tensions escalating. The international community closely watches for any developments that could further intensify the conflict.
