Israel Shuts Down Lebanese News Outlet Under Emergency Measures

Israel Implements Emergency Measures, Shuts Down Lebanese News Outlet Over Security Concerns

In a significant move, Israel has invoked newly enacted emergency measures to close down a Lebanon-based media outlet, Al Mayadeen, citing national security concerns. The decision was made by the Israeli security cabinet, marking the first application of emergency powers granted last month.

Emergency Powers in Action: The Israeli security cabinet, in a unanimous decision, voted to block access to Al Mayadeen’s satellite news in Israel. The cabinet accused the media outlet of engaging in wartime efforts to harm Israel’s security interests, asserting that it served the goals of the country’s enemies. This marks the inaugural use of emergency measures that empower the government to temporarily shut down news outlets perceived as threatening national security.

Government Actions Unveiled: Following the cabinet’s decision, Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi collaborated with law enforcement to propose the blocking of Al Mayadeen websites and the confiscation of associated equipment. Additionally, Karhi has sought the closure of Al Mayadeen offices in the West Bank through coordination with the Israeli military chief in that region.

Minister’s Statement: Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, announcing the closure, stated, “Broadcasts such as these identify with the enemy while harming state security and will be blocked. Al Mayadeen’s broadcasts and reports serve the despicable terrorist organizations, and the time has come for a reckoning with them.”

Differing Perspectives on Al Mayadeen: While some outlets, such as the Times of Israel, characterize Al Mayadeen as pro-Hezbollah, others, including Reuters, label it as pro-Iranian. Al Mayadeen, self-described as an independent Arab media satellite channel, has not yet responded to VOA’s request for comment.

International Criticism and Reactions: The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) criticized the emergency regulation as “an attempt to censor” media coverage under the guise of national security. IFJ described the ban on Al Mayadeen as “a serious blow on media pluralism and the public’s right to know.”

Media Regulations Background: The Israeli government had initially considered using these emergency regulations to close the Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera. The regulations, introduced on October 20, empower the communications minister, with the approval of the defense minister and security cabinet, to close foreign media outlets during the ongoing state of emergency. A district court must uphold or deny the order within three days, and it is initially valid for 30 days, extendable in additional 30-day periods.

Journalists’ Safety Concerns: This development occurs against the backdrop of heightened risks for journalists. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) notes that the ongoing conflict has resulted in the deadliest month for journalists since 1992. At least 42 reporters, including 37 Palestinians, four Israelis, and one Lebanese, have lost their lives during the war, according to CPJ.
