In a surprising turn of events, Buta Biberaj, the Commonwealth’s Attorney of Loudoun County in Virginia, backed by George Soros, faced defeat in the recent election despite a substantial financial advantage. Biberaj, who received nearly $1 million in support from Soros since 2019, lost to her Republican opponent, Bob Anderson, by a margin of just 300 votes.
After the completion of ballot counting from last week’s election, Anderson emerged victorious with 68,080 votes, while Biberaj secured 67,768 votes. This marks the closest Commonwealth’s Attorney’s race in Loudoun history, with Biberaj’s campaign considering a recount given the slim margin.
Despite being outspent by Biberaj, Anderson managed to secure the win. Biberaj spent a staggering $1.1 million on her campaign, nearly 16 times more than Anderson’s expenditure of $70,356, according to Virginia Public Access Project data.
Biberaj’s campaign received substantial support from progressive groups, including the Working Families Party National PAC and the Soros-backed Justice and Public Safety PAC. Since 2019, the latter has invested $926,000 in Biberaj’s candidacy, contributing to ad buys, literature, and polling services.
George Soros has been actively funding candidates across the country in an effort to reform the criminal justice system. The Justice and Public Safety PAC, fueled by Soros, has spent significant sums supporting various prosecutor candidates in Virginia, with some successfully securing re-election.
Controversies Surrounding Biberaj
Biberaj’s tenure as Commonwealth’s Attorney has not been without controversy. She faced a bar complaint in 2022 for allegedly misleading the court and the public, leading to her office being removed from a criminal case. Additionally, concerns over impartiality led to her dismissal from an appeal case in the same year. Biberaj has also faced accusations of targeting political opponents and hiring a convicted sex offender as a paralegal.
Despite the significant financial support from George Soros and progressive groups, Buta Biberaj’s defeat in Loudoun County highlights the complex dynamics at play in local elections. The narrow margin and controversies surrounding her tenure raise questions about the future of criminal justice reform efforts in the region.
